To apply for Learning Abroad opportunities, the process differs on the program of your interest.
In some cases, there may be an online application portal open to students which contains certain deadlines and procedures. You should ensure your eligibility, and prepare all the required documents beforehand. You can apply directly through individual experiences.
Exchange Opportunities
The Exchange Program offers the experience of developing employability skills, globalizing classroom content, and expanding networks.
Also pay close attention to timelines and deadlines when looking into opportunities to learn abroad as they are program specific.

*Students from Faculty of Law should apply by the deadlines specified by their faculty.
It takes approximately at least 8 weeks from the application deadline for the CIE to review and respond.

In order to apply for your exchange program, you will need to follow these steps:
- Read and make sure you meet the Eligibility Requirements for exchange opportunities.
- Attend one of the “How to Get Started” info sessions. UTM students may choose to attend info sessions offered by UTM Global Learning. UTSC students can book a Global Mobility Advising (UTSC) appointment on Folio instead.
- Choose when to go. Fall, Winter, Full Year or Summer? Please speak with your department’s academic advisor and find out how being away during Fall/Winter will impact your degree progression. Students participating in exchange for Full Year or Winter term cannot graduate in June of the same year.
- Start your application here. Choose your destinations and prepare a list of courses you are interested in taking at each host institution. You must meet the eligibility requirements for each host institution.
- Upload additional documents:
- Resume (for assistance, please visit the Career Exploration and Education Centre)
- SGS Approval Form (required for all graduate students)
- Combined Program Student Approval Form (required for Law students in a combined program only)
- Interim Grade Report (required for students who have completed less than 4.0 credits)
- Answer questions about your motivations for learning abroad.
- You will have the option to apply for CIE funding. Provide us with additional information on your current situation, your parents’ and your personal resources, and any additional information that would support your application.

It is NOT possible to change your exchange term after you submit your application, so make sure you are applying for the intended term.
For Summer Research Exchange Program (SREP), please follow the application steps on Folio.

Any changes made to your application during 12am-12:30am EST will not be saved.
Non-Exchange Opportunities
With The CIE
The CIE advertises non-exchange opportunities such as Independent Summer Programs or placement opportunities. To apply for a non-exchange opportunity, please follow the instructions relevant to the opportunity as described in the experience page and click the “learn more” option at the bottom of the experience page to be redirected as needed.
Some opportunities will require applications to the CIE, others an application directly to the host institution. Make sure you understand the conditions and you follow the relevant application procedures.
