HERE IS WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU APPLY FOR AN IE+ AWARD:

BEFORE APPLICATION

The International Experience (IE+) Award is a needs-based monetary award for U of T students participating in university-sanctioned in-person learning abroad experiences, organized or coordinated by a department or faculty at U of T. The IE+ Award is not for covering tuition and program fees, and cannot cover the whole cost of a student’s learning abroad experience. The award is intended to support those in financial need with a contribution toward their roundtrip airfare and some living costs. The IE+ Award is calculated based on the destination of the program, the duration of the program, the average roundtrip airfare, and the difference in the cost of living between the program destination and Toronto.

CIE can grant only one award per student per experience, limited to a maximum of $10,000 over two years. If you have received an award from CIE in the past year (IE and/or IE+), this may limit your eligibility to receive the award this year.

  1. You must be enrolled at U of T during the time of your learning abroad experience. Students who have convocated prior to their experience are not eligible for the award.
  2. You are participating in a university-sanctioned in-person learning abroad opportunity that is organized or coordinated by any department or faculty at U of T (and not through CIE). Students going on a Learning Abroad Program through CIE are not eligible for the IE Award+ and should refer to the IE Award page.
  3. Safety Abroad Requirements (Registry + Workshop) are mandatory and must be completed whether or not students are granted the award.

Please note, the IE+ Award is not available for past (completed) learning abroad experiences.

If your Learning Abroad Activity is organized or coordinated by your department at U of T, then you can apply for the IE+ Award. A U of T sanctioned activity may include course work, research or (unpaid) professional experiences. Experiences can be:

  1. Officially recognized or supported by U of T for academic purposes, or
  2. Officially recognized by U of T as a co-curricular activity (CCR), or
  3. Part of a program supported or sponsored by U of T

You should apply 6 weeks before departure, as the processing time for the award is up to 6 weeks. You can still apply if you are leaving in less than 6 weeks, but keep in mind that application processing time will not change.

Please note, the IE+ Award is not available for past (completed) learning abroad experiences.

If you have any questions regarding the IE+ Award, please reach out to the International Experience Awards Office at cie.funding@utoronto.ca.

DURING APPLICATION

You will have to apply for the IE+ Award through the application form on this website (at least 6 weeks before departure) and it will take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Processing time for the award is up to 6 weeks.

Complete all Safety Abroad requirements prior to your travel (both the pre-departure Safety Abroad Registry and Workshop). These requirements are mandatory for all international university-sanctioned activities to ensure your safety and well-being during your time abroad.  If you have questions, you can contact safety.abroad@utoronto.ca.

AFTER APPLICATION

Once a decision is made, you will receive an e-mail from the International Experience Awards Office, and if eligible, the amount of the award as well as the next steps. Please keep in mind, processing time takes up to 6 weeks.

If you are nominated for the award, you will have to provide:

  1. The Letter of Acceptance/Admission to your learning abroad activity and/or Letter of Support from your academic unit at U of T. The Letter of Support should provide details about your trip (including destination and dates) and how it ties back to your academic studies/research at U of T.
  2. Complete the Safety Abroad Registry and Workshop prior to your travel and set up direct deposit on ACORN
  3. After arrival, provide a completed Confirmation of Arrival (signed and stamped).

The award disbursement period remains open up until 6 weeks following the end date of your learning abroad program. All award post-departure requirements must be completed by this deadline. Please note, the Safety Abroad requirements must be completed prior to your travel, otherwise you will not be able to receive your award.

The Confirmation of Arrival must be signed and stamped after you have arrived at your destination. This stamp usually has the institution’s name on it. It could be department specific or an institutional stamp that is used. Please ensure that the name of the signatory is on the Confirmation of Arrival. If an institutional stamp is not available, please have the supervisor/host institution/program coordinator email the signed and completed arrival form to the International Experience Awards Office at cie.funding@utoronto.ca.
