To apply for Learning Abroad opportunities, the process differs on the program of your interest.
In some cases, there may be an online application portal open to students which contains certain deadlines and procedures. You should ensure your eligibility, and prepare all the required documents beforehand. You can apply directly through individual experiences.
Exchange Opportunities
The Exchange Program offers the experience of developing employability skills, globalizing classroom content, and expanding networks.
Also pay close attention to timelines and deadlines when looking into opportunities to learn abroad as they are program specific.

**Students from Faculty of Law must apply by the deadlines specified by their faculty.
***Students from MScSM program must apply by the deadlines specified by their program.

It takes approximately at least 8 weeks from the application deadline for the CIE to review and respond.

To apply for an exchange opportunity, please follow these steps:
1. Review Eligibility Requirements
Ensure you meet all the Eligibility Requirements for an exchange program. There maybe additional requirements for the institution you are applying for.
2. Attend an Info Session
Join one of the How to Get Started info sessions or watch the recording (Part 1 & 2).
- UTM students: Attend sessions offered by UTM Global Learning.
- UTSC students: Global Mobility Advising (UTSC) appointment is available via Folio.
- Rotman Commerce students: Go to RC Portal Events
3. Decide When to Go
Choose your preferred term: Fall, Winter, Full Year, or Summer.
- Speak with your department’s academic advisor to understand how learning abroad during Fall/Winter may affect your degree progression.
- Students going on exchange for Full Year or Winter term will not be able to graduate in June of the same academic year.
- Term dates are different at each institution. Not all institutions are available for Fall term.
4. Start Your Application
Begin your application here.
- Select your preferred destinations and rank them.
- Prepare a list of courses you are interested in taking at each host institution.
- Ensure you meet the eligibility requirements for each host institution.
5. Upload Required Documents
You will need to include these files when you apply:
- Resume (For support, please visit the Career Exploration and Education Centre)
- SGS Approval Form (Required for all graduate students)
- Combined Program Student Approval Form (Required for Law students in a combined program)
- Interim Grade Report (Required for undergraduate students who have completed less than 4.0 U of T credits)
6. Answer the Motivational Question
Provide a thoughtful response about your motivations for learning abroad and why you would be a good candidate for your preferred destination.
7. Apply for CIE Funding – IE Award (Optional)
You can apply through the CIE funding section in your exchange application. Please provide:
- Details about your current financial situation
- Information about your parents’ and personal resources
- Any additional context that supports your funding application.

- Attend “How to Get Started” info session or watch the recording for guidance on preparing your application.
Important Application Rules
- Once submitted, your exchange term cannot be changed. Please ensure you are applying for the correct and intended term.
- Multiple applications for the same or overlapping term are not permitted. Choose from Full Year, Fall or Winter and submit only one application.
2026 Summer Coursework Exchange application will open in late October 2025. To receive application information, please sign up for the Learning Abroad newsletter.

Non-Exchange Opportunities
With The CIE
The CIE advertises non-exchange opportunities such as Independent Summer Programs or placement opportunities. To apply for a non-exchange opportunity, please follow the instructions relevant to the opportunity as described in the experience page and click the “learn more” option at the bottom of the experience page to be redirected as needed.
Some opportunities will require applications to the CIE, others an application directly to the host institution. Make sure you understand the conditions and you follow the relevant application procedures.
