Samuel’s Story

National University of Singapore

Summer Exchange Student at The Faculty of Arts and Science (St. George Campus), 2023-2024

Describe your UofT experience.

Eye-opening, full to the brim with new and exciting experiences, and a dream come true!

I got the chance to meet people from all around the world. It was fun telling my story, listening to others’, and discussing the different cultures and lifestyles we experience in different countries.

I struggled to find the time to do everything I wanted to. There’s just too much to experience!

How was your academic experience at UofT?

Academically speaking, I experienced a new kind of teacher-student dynamic. I felt that the lecturers at UofT are personally invested in the course content and the students’ progress, and that made me feel more invested in the course. The courses I took allowed me freedom to explore what I was interested in.

What were you nervous about before coming, that ended up surprising you?

I was a little worried about not getting the taste of home in Toronto, but I came to love the plethora of options (and food trucks!) nearby. Some places we kept going back to, because they were so ridiculously good!

How has your UofT experience changed you?

My time at UofT has opened my eyes to what the world has to offer. My view of what the future holds used to be more confined, but now I see how exciting it can be to live life abroad and, in doing so, evolve as an individual.

Now you’re back home, what do you miss about UofT and Toronto?

I miss the weather, the nature, the space. I miss the atmosphere, the encouragement of expression, the opportunities, the people and their laughs and smiles.

Take me back please :’)

Any words of advice for future program participants?

Come with an open mind! There’s no point planning a bucket list – the locals know best.
