Exchange vs. Non-Exchange:

There are two different ways to apply for this program: Exchange and Non-exchange. This page is for the Summer School Exchange application only. Click here for the Summer School (Non-Exchange) informationPlease read these instructions carefully, and only apply to one of them:

In a Summer School Exchange, each host institution allocates a limited number of spots for U of T students, and the Centre for International Experience (CIE) selects students to fill these spaces. You apply through Mobility Online and are selected internally by CIE. If chosen, you will be formally nominated to the host institution for their summer program. Spaces are limited and not guaranteed.

Fees
Nominated students must pay the tuition & incidental fees to U of T by the Summer Payment Deadline.  You can find the summer tuition information on the Fees & Payments page. While tuition is paid to U of T, you are still responsible for additional costs as specified by the host institution, such as housing, excursions, and administrative fees. You will also be responsible for the cost of flights, visas (if applicable) and other general cost of living while abroad.

Students will be eligible to apply for the needs-based IE Award.

Transfer Credit
Exchange students must have their courses formally pre-assessed and approved for transfer credit before their departure. CIE Learning Abroad will send instructions on this process once you are selected.

If you wish to find more Summer Exchange Programs, please search the “Find Your Experience” tool here. To Learn more about Independent Summer School options, find more information here.

When participating in a Summer School (non-exchange), you apply directly to the host institution, independently of CIE Learning Abroad.

Transfer Credit
Courses at a Summer School (non-exchange) may be available for transfer credit at U of T, however, your faculty must pre-approve the courses you plan to take abroad. It is your responsibility to consult with your Faculty Registrar’s office regarding eligibility requirements for transfer credits for independent (non-exchange) summer programs. There is no guarantee that transfer credit requests will be approved. There is typically a fee for applying for transfer credit.

Please see the Transfer Credit process for your Faculty:

Fees
You will pay tuition to the host institution at the rates listed on their website. Some institutions offer discounts for U of T students. Review costs carefully and confirm the currency used when prices are listed. You will also be responsible for other costs such as accommodation, meals, visas, insurance, etc. You will not be registered as a U of T student during the summer semester and you will not pay U of T tuition

Students are eligible to apply for the needs-based IE+ Award. Please note that the processing time takes up to six weeks. If you are eligible to receive an IE Award+, your award will only be paid after all Safety Abroad Requirements are completed. You will not receive funds until you arrive at the site of your program.

Safety Abroad
Complete the Safety Abroad Requirements (including both Safety Abroad Registry and Workshop) 4 weeks prior to departure. Proof of completion is typically required when applying for transfer credit through your home faculty. Only students who complete all Safety Abroad requirements are eligible for IE+ Award.
