Tsinghua University was founded in 1911 on the site of Tsinghua Garden, a former Qing Dynasty imperial private garden. Tsinghua University is now a comprehensive university home to over 59,000 students with 21, 59 departments and ranked #20 globally according to QS University rankings. Students have taken courses here in Economics and East Asian Studies.

Tsinghua University does not accept Chinese citizens (including Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao) through the exchange program. Students who were previously residents of Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong or Macau must have formally renounced and deregistered their Chinese nationality and household registration (Hukou). They must provide official certificates confirming the cancellation of their Chinese nationality and household registration at the time of their application to Tsinghua University.
