Summer School (Non-exchange)

Spend up to 8 weeks abroad at one of the University of Toronto’s international partner institutions through an International Summer School program.

  • Explore new academic interests or deepen your expertise in your current field
  • Gain an enriching global experience without committing to a full-term exchange
  • Meet like-minded students from around the world

When participating in a Summer School (non-exchange), you apply directly to the host institution, independently of CIE Learning Abroad. To view Summer School Exchange options, click here.

Transfer Credit
Courses at a Summer School (non-exchange) may be available for transfer credit at U of T, however, your faculty must pre-approve the courses you plan to take abroad. It is your responsibility to consult with your Faculty Registrar’s office regarding eligibility requirements for transfer credits for independent (non-exchange) summer programs.

In some cases CIE will know the program is not eligible for transfer credit. This will be listed under the “notes” section below. However, there is no guarantee that transfer credit requests will be approved for any summer school (non-exchange) course. Please note, there is typically a fee for applying for transfer credit.

Please see the Transfer Credit process for your Faculty:

  • Faculty of Arts & Science (St. George)
  • UTM
  • UTSC (Note for UTSC students: To be eligible for transfer credit, you must consult with the UTSC Transfer Credit team before enrolling. Additionally, students are required to submit a Letter of Permission (LOP), as PATC applications are no longer approved.)
  • Applied Science and Engineering: Students are required to reach out to their Academic advisor if considering these opportunities

Fees
You will pay tuition to the host institution at the rates listed on their website. Some institutions offer discounts for U of T students. Review costs carefully and confirm the currency used when prices are listed. You will also be responsible for other costs such as accommodation, meals, visas, insurance, etc. You will not be registered as a U of T student during the summer semester and you will not pay U of T tuition

Students are eligible to apply for the needs-based IE+ Award. Please note that the processing time takes up to six weeks. If you are eligible to receive an IE Award+, your award will only be paid after all Safety Abroad Requirements are completed. You will not receive funds until you arrive at the site of your program.

Safety Abroad
Complete the Safety Abroad Requirements (including both Safety Abroad Registry and Workshop) 4 weeks prior to departure. Proof of completion is typically required when applying for transfer credit through your home faculty. Only students who complete all Safety Abroad requirements are eligible for IE+ Award.

How to Apply
Application deadlines and requirements are set by the host institution. Review the Summer School (Non-exchange) Destinations list below for a link to each program. Apply directly on the host institution’s website.
