What you can study while on exchange at U of T largely depends on which faculty you are admitted to. Below you will find details about eligibility, academic options and restrictions, and application requirements by U of T faculty. All graduate-level exchange students should be nominated to the School of Graduate Studies.

The Faculty of Music at U of T offers courses in a range of disciplines including composition, education, history, theory, composition, music technology, music and health as well as performance (classical and jazz) at the undergraduate and graduate level. Exchange students interested in studying at the Faculty of Music at the graduate level should apply to the School of Graduate Studies (SGS).

At U of T, our undergraduate program is 4 years in length. If you are in the first year of your graduate program, but have only completed a 3-year undergraduate program, you should be nominated as an undergraduate student for exchange at U of T.

Restrictions

For students from University of Edinburgh, please note the following course restrictions.

Students can request enrolment in courses with the DMU, EMU, HMU, MMU, TMU and SMU course prefixes. Courses with the CMU, JMU and PMU prefixes have restrictions.

(a)For courses with the CMU prefixes, the following are restricted: 

CMU110H1, CMU210Y1, CMU211Y1, CMU310Y1, CMU311Y1 and CMU410Y1 

(b)For courses with the JMU prefixes, all courses are restricted except the following:

Application

After you have been nominated by your home institution, you will be invited to apply for exchange at U of T via our Mobility Online portal. The Faculty of Music requires the following documents:

 Student applicants must submit:

* All student documents must be submitted in PDF (Word or other forms will not be accepted).

  • Statement of interest (1-2 pages)
  • Course descriptions: A typed chart that briefly details all post-secondary courses you have/will complete before coming to the University of Toronto. The chart should include course titles and a short description or list of the main topics covered in each course (copying and pasting from a course calendar/syllabus is fine).
  • Faculty of Music Student Exchange Questionnaire (for University of Edinburgh students)
  • Faculty of Music Student Exchange Questionnaire (for all other students)
  • (plus any additional requirements as detailed in the questionnaire – i.e. performance videos, composition portfolio, etc.) For composition, they can submit their compositions as a PDF or Paper. The instructions are in the Questionnaire in the composition section.

 

 Partner institution staff must submit:

* All partner documents must be submitted in PDF (Word or other forms will not be accepted).

  • Academic transcripts of all previous post-secondary study
  • Two reference letters are required – student to submit these to partner staff who will upload these letters on their behalf
