University of Toronto – Globalink Research Award (Mitacs)

Take your research abroad with the University of Toronto – Globalinks Research Award (GRA)

This award offers funding for undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows to conduct 12–24-week research projects at U of T and abroad

GRA provides $6000 to successful applicants to come to UofT for 12-24 weeks for a research project.

To apply for the award, follow these steps.

25% of your 12-24 week long research project may be completed at home institution

 

  • Secure your home and host supervisor

As a prospective inbound student to UofT, you will need to secure an academic supervisor at your home institution as well as one at UofT.

For Undergraduate Students: Your start date at UofT must be at the beginning of an academic term. You may come for longer than one term but the start date must be at the beginning of any of the following terms.

Fall semester: September to December

Spring/Winter semester: January to April

Summer semester: May to August (recommended)

For Graduate Students: Your start date at UofT can be any time during the year. However, it is recommended that you start when the term starts (as stated above).

When you have a research project confirmation from an academic supervisor at your home university and an academic supervisor at UofT, you must complete the application process below. The application process for the GRA is outlined below.

  • Complete and submit the following application forms to the Centre for International Experience at U of T

NOTE: you must sign this document and obtain signatures from both academic supervisors. The Canadian University Representative section will be completed by UofT, please leave it blank

 

2. Research proposal [doc]

 

3. Student CV on Mitacs template [doc]

 

4. Letters of support from both your academic supervisors. Both letters must:

a.  Be written on university letterhead

b.  Provide the supervisor’s title and department

c.  Outline supervisory and/or financial support for the student and project

d.  Describe the student’s academic and research qualities, outstanding achievements, and ability to complete the project

 

5. Host supervisor’s CV in English or French, including funding history, publications, and graduate students supervised

 

6. For undergraduate students only: you must also provide an electronic copy of your student transcript.

 

6. For graduate students only: (Masters, PhD and Postdoctoral fellows): you must also complete the International visiting graduate student (IVGS) application by submitting the form [doc]

 

The application package must be submitted via ONE email to mahvish.wesley@utoronto.ca

 

  • You will receive a letter of confirmation from Mitacs – Globalink Research Award in approximately 10-12 weeks after submission

 

  • Prepare for your arrival

1.  Obtain appropriate health insurance as well as visas and needed permits.

2.  Arrange for housing, some useful resources for housing at and near U of T can be found here: www.housing.utoronto.ca.

The GRA provides $6,000 for senior undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows in Canada to conduct research projects at universities overseas for 12-24 weeks. 

To apply for the award, follow these steps.

Talk to your faculty supervisor or university international office to identify a professor in one of the eligible destinations who works in your research area

Reach out to the professor(s) about your research and hosting your potential project

 

  • Get signatures from your home and host professors

Signatures can be electronic or a scanned image.

 

  • University Office of Research Services will be obtained by UofT, please leave this section blank at the time of submission

 

  • Email your complete application as one package, for review and submission at least 12 weeks prior to your project start date

The GRA supports international research collaboration. It provides $6,000 for senior undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows to conduct research projects under the joint supervision of home and host professors, for 12-24 weeks.

Receiving students

To be eligible, you must:

  • Must be recognized faculty members
  • Must be eligible to host graduate students
  • Incoming students must have matching $3,000 CAD from another source (home country, university, industry partner, home or host professor’s funding package, etc.) in order to receive $3,000 CAD from Globalink Research Award for a total of $6,000 CAD

Sending students

To be eligible, you must:

  • Must hold a faculty position at a Canadian university
  • Must be eligible to hold Tri-Council funding and to supervise graduate students
