Take your research abroad with the University of Toronto – Mitacs Globalink Research Award (GRA)

The Mitacs Globalink Research Award (GRA) provides $6,000 for senior undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in select Mitacs partner countries to conduct 12–24-week research projects at the University of Toronto.

Check your eligibility
1. Must be registered as full-time undergraduates, graduate students, or postdoctoral fellows at an eligible university or institution and remain as such throughout the Globalink Research Award. Postdoctoral fellows may apply if their date of graduation from a PhD program is no more than 5 years prior to the proposed start date of the research project.
2. Must come from a Mitacs partner country, and, in some cases, a Mitacs partner institution. Check country and institution requirements here. If the country you are from is not listed, please contact globalinkaward@utoronto.ca.
3. Cannot undertake a research project at an institution in Canada where you have previously completed a degree and/or been employed.
4. Must be the legal age of majority in Canada (18 years of age or older).
5. Must meet the travel requirements for your intended destination in Canada, including visa and/or immigration requirements and associated documentation
6. Cannot have previously received a Globalink Research Award (no more than one Globalink Research Award per academic lifetime).

Secure your home and host supervisor
As a prospective inbound student to UofT, you will need to secure an academic supervisor at your home institution as well as one at UofT. The UofT host supervisor will provide $2000 in matched funding to add to the Mitacs funding, for a total of $6000.

2. Must be eligible to supervise graduate students and hold Tri-Council funding

Plan your project start and end dates. Follow UofT’s academic terms as a guide when planning your project.
Research projects are conducted over 12–24-weeks at University of Toronto. You may complete up to 25% of the total project length at your home institution. Please view U of T’s academic terms below if you would like to plan the start of your project in accordance with UofT’s academic terms. You may come for longer than one term.
For Undergraduate students:
1. Fall semester: September to December
2. Spring/Winter semester: January to April
3. Summer semester: May to August (recommended)
For Graduate students:
1. Your start date at UofT can be any time during the year. However, it is recommended that you start when the term starts (as stated above).
2. When you receive a confirmation from an academic supervisor at your home university and an academic supervisor at UofT, you may start preparing your application materials. The application process for the GRA is outlined below.

Complete the GRA application materials. Submit your application materials at least 12-weeks in advanced of your planned project start date.

Research projects must fit within the University of Toronto’s thematic research areas of strategic importance.

3. Student CV on Mitacs template.
4. Letters of support from both your academic supervisors. Both letters must:
a. Be written on university letterhead.
b. Provide the supervisor’s title and department.
c. Outline supervisory and/or financial support for the student and project.
d. Describe the student’s academic and research qualities, outstanding achievements, and ability to complete the project.
5. Host supervisor’s CV in English or French, including funding history, publications, and graduate students supervised.
7. For graduate students only (Masters, PhD and Postdoctoral fellows): you must also complete the International visiting graduate student (IVGS) application by submitting the form.

Await the outcome of your application
You will receive a letter of confirmation from Mitacs – Globalink Research Award in approximately 10-12 weeks after submission.

2. Please contact your home institution for any pre-departure related questions.
3. Complete and return the Code of Ethics form to Mitacs.

The GRA supports international research collaboration. It provides $6,000 for senior undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows to conduct research projects under the joint supervision of home and host professors, for 12-24 weeks.
To be eligible, supervisors:
- Must hold a faculty position.
- Must be eligible to supervise graduate students (UofT supervisors must be eligible to hold Tri-Council funding).
Funding:
- UofT supervisors must have identified matched funding of $2000, for a total award value of $6,000 CAD.
- UofT supervisors must complete and submit the U of T Funding Form. This form must be submitted as part of the GRA application package. (Please note that the current funding form will soon be updated with changes. Please contact globalinkaward@utoronto.ca to request the new form).
- UofT supervisors will need to set up a MRA (My Research Application). More information about MRAs can be found here.

Secure your home and host supervisor, and matching funding
As an outbound UofT student, you will need to secure an academic supervisor at a host institution as well as one at UofT. The UofT supervisor will provide $2000 in matched funding to add to the Mitacs funding, for a total of $6000.

Plan your project start and end dates
Research projects are conducted over 12–24-weeks at a host institution. You may complete up to 25% of the total project length at your home institution (UofT).

Complete the GRA application materials. Submit your application materials at least 16-weeks in advanced of your planned project start date.

Research projects must fit within the University of Toronto’s thematic research areas of strategic importance.

3. Student CV on Mitacs template.
4. Letters of support from both your academic supervisors. Both letters must:
a. Be written on university letterhead.
b. Provide the supervisor’s title and department.
c. Outline supervisory and/or financial support for the student and project.
d. Describe the student’s academic and research qualities, outstanding achievements, and ability to complete the project.
5. Host supervisor’s CV in English or French, including funding history, publications, and graduate students supervised.

Await the outcome of your application
You will receive a letter of confirmation from Mitacs – Globalink Research Award in approximately 10-12 weeks after submission.

Receive notice of successful application outcome
1. Complete and return the Pre-Departure form to Mitacs.
2. In order to complete the form, students need to fulfill all of U of T Safety Abroad requirements.
3. Please contact safety.abroad@utoronto.ca for any pre-departure related questions.
4. Complete and return the Code of Ethics form to Mitacs.-

PLEASE NOTE: The Mitacs GRA agreement was recently updated. Faculty members: please review the updated funding information, as matched funding is now required for both inbound and outbound applications. Applicants: if you have been preparing application documents before August 27, 2020, please contact us to learn about any changes that might affect your application.
The GRA supports international research collaboration. It provides $6,000 for senior undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows to conduct research projects under the joint supervision of home and host professors, for 12-24 weeks.
To be eligible, supervisors:
- Must hold a faculty position.
- Must be eligible to supervise graduate students (UofT supervisors must be eligible to hold Tri-Council funding).
Funding:
- UofT supervisors must have identified matched funding of $2000, for a total award value of $6,000 CAD.
- UofT supervisors must complete and submit the U of T Funding Form. This form must be submitted as part of the GRA application package. (Please note that the current funding form will soon be updated with changes. Please contact globalinkaward@utoronto.ca to request the new form).
- UofT supervisors will need to set up a MRA (My Research Application). More information about MRAs can be found here.
