Summer Research: Singapore Management University

A premier university in Asia, the Singapore Management University (SMU) is internationally recognized for its world-class research and distinguished teaching. Established in 2000, the SMU is comprised of six schools: School of Accountancy, Lee Kong Chian School of Business, School of Economics, School of Information Systems, School of Law, and School of Social Sciences. SMU is ranked in the Top 100 universities in the World in Accounting and Finance, Economics and Econometrics, Social sciences and Management.

Students can participate in research projects in the fields of Engineering, Computer Science, and Information Systems.


Credit Equivalency: 5.0 credits at UofT = 10 credits at SMU. Note: Instead of getting a transcript from the host university, admitted students must enroll in an Independent Research (or similar) course in the equivalent department at U of T.

Departmental approved pathways: Engineering not-for-credit (You do not pay U of T tuition)

Research Projects: School of Information Systems 

The following 2 research projects will be supervised by Professor Tan Hwee Pink and are available for student participation:

Project 1: aims to understand the relationship between social and health factors, and community engagement of community-dwelling seniors. A data-driven approach will be utilized.

Project 2: aims to understand the relationship between social and health factors, and travel patterns of wheelchair users. A data-driven approach will be utilized.

Housing: On-campus housing is not available. Housing information is provided.

Funding: Students applying to the Singapore Management University (SMU) for 12 weeks should also apply for Globalink Research Award. Successful GRA applicants will not be considered for $3000 CIE funding and IE Award because the GRA amount is greater of the two.
